Great Barrier Reef may be safe from massive mud dump


No sludge for this reef. The planned dumping of 5 million tonnes of mud in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park has been cancelled. But scientists say they have little confidence that any new plan will be properly examined.


The mud is due to be dredged up as part of the expansion of a port at Abbot Point in north-east Australia to support new coal mines. The sediment dump was approved by environment minister Greg Hunt and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.


But following an outcry, the consortium behind the expansion has reportedly abandoned the offshore plan. A spokesperson for Hunt told New Scientist that they are expecting new proposals to dispose of the dredged sediment on land.


Avoiding offshore dumping will be an improvement, says Selina Ward of the University of Queensland, who spearheaded a petition of scientists against the plans. "But the vital question is where they dump it," she says. It would be a disaster if it were dumped on crucial local wetlands.


It's not clear where they will dump the soil on land, says Jon Brodie of James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland. The port is surrounded by a mountain, wetlands and a beach, so there is nowhere to stockpile the soil before it is moved.


Brodie says he has no confidence in the approval process. "They'll come up with some other option that hasn't been analysed properly," he says.


The best option for the reef, Brodie says, is a long jetty that ships can dock to, removing the need for dredging.

Soviet-era hyperboloid tower saved from destruction

MODERN technology appears to have saved a Soviet relic, following a smartphone vote on the fate of the extraordinary Shukhov Tower.


Often described as a Muscovite Eiffel Tower, the 92-year-old structure had fallen into disrepair since it stopped transmitting TV signals in 2002. Plans to dismantle and relocate the tower were announced earlier this year, prompting Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and other architects to petition Russian president Vladimir Putin to save it. Moscow's city council has now announced that the tower will be preserved at its current site. This follows a smartphone poll over the landmark's future, in which 91 per cent of respondents voted in favour of keeping the tower where it was.

The 160-metre-tall steel lattice tower was built in 1922 without the use of scaffolding or cranes. Engineer Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov constructed the tower using a telescopic method, building each higher section within the layer below and then using pulleys and winches to raise it up, creating the next level. Each section is in the shape of a hyperboloid, a mathematical surface with three dimensions.


According to the Shukhov Tower Foundation, renovation of the tower could cost 500 million roubles (£8.3m). It is feared that without restoration the neglected tower could become a hazard to its neighbourhood.

Major quarantine and experimental vaccines to curb Ebola


The Ebola epidemic in West Africa is raging out of control. Known cases have topped 3000 – with the true number thought to be two to four times that – and they are climbing exponentially, doubling every 35 days. The World Health Organization warns of a possible 20,000 known cases in the coming months if efforts to control the outbreak do not bear fruit.


The virus has now invaded Senegal, a fifth country, in what the WHO are calling a top-priority emergency.


The only effective controls are tracking and quarantining people exposed to the virus, and perhaps a vaccine. Last week, the WHO outlined an aggressive road map to stop the spread of the virus. It implied that this could involve quarantining entire communities in badly affected areas. An effort to do this without warning the community ended in riots in a slum in Monrovia, Liberia, last month, but the WHO hopes more community involvement will help in future.


An unprecedented effort has also been launched to make a currently experimental vaccine available on a large scale as early as January.


So far, quarantine has proved difficult. In July an infected man flew from Liberia to Lagos, Nigeria, and was hospitalised, infecting health staff. All people who had come into contact with him were thought to be isolated, but last week it emerged that one person flew to Port Harcourt, further along the coast, to be treated secretly. His doctor died and 160 people who were in contact with them are now in quarantine.


Under the radar


Meanwhile a man under surveillance in Guinea after exposure to Ebola travelled to Senegal and developed the disease. He initially went to hospital without warning medical staff of his exposure to the virus. The people he had contact with are now being traced.


Quarantine has worked on Ebola in the past, but those outbreaks had at most a few hundred cases. It is proving difficult to scale up such labour-intensive methods to the West African epidemic, says Bruce Aylward, head of emergency operations at the WHO.


"We can't contact-trace every individual," Aylward said in a WHO press conference to launch the new road map in Geneva, on 29 August. "So in this case you may have to trace an infected village or community for the time being." This implies that more communities could be held under quarantine.


The WHO's plan aims to stop viral transmission in the most affected countries by June 2015, and stop it invading new ones, for a projected cost of $490 million over the next six months. It calls for more Ebola treatment centres, healthcare facilities to find cases, contact-tracing and mobilisation of communities to safely bury people killed by Ebola, as well as the recruitment of 760 international health staff and 12,000 within the most-affected countries.


It also calls for "short-term extraordinary measures to limit national spread". While the road map doesn't spell out what the extraordinary measures are, it does call for healthcare, food and social support in containment areas. Aylward told the press conference the such measures should slow transmission in the worst hotspots enough by December to allow the standard method of tracking individual contacts of patients to become effective again.


Vaccine hope


The WHO plan emphasises cooperation with affected communities, for instance giving people more protective equipment so that they can care for their sick. But Aylward said unaffected countries are reacting to Ebola by buying up global supplies of masks, gowns and gloves, hindering the effort.


Even if they can be obtained, getting supplies and health workers into affected countries is getting harder. Airlines are cancelling flights partly because there are no certified safe hotels or medical care for air crews on overnight refuelling stops. The UN World Food Programme is supplying emergency aircraft to get people and supplies, and the WHO is in talks with airlines in a bid to fix these problems within a few weeks.


The other angle of attack is a vaccine. Last week UK-based pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline said it would start making 10,000 doses of an experimental vaccine composed of a harmless adenovirus that expresses an Ebola protein. The vaccine was safe and provoked immune reactions to Ebola in tests in non-human primates, but had not been tested in humans.


Those tests will start this week with volunteers in the US, followed by people in the UK, Gambia and Mali. In an unprecedented move, GSK will make the vaccine in bulk while those tests are under way. If it passes, it could be used in Africa early next year.


Encouraging results have also been reported in primates with an experimental drug called ZMapp. But that drug is aimed at curing infected people and would have little impact on transmission of the virus.

Jennifer Lawrence photo hack highlights risks of cloud


How safe is the cloud? A massive leak of intimate pictures from a raft of celebrity cloud-based image storage accounts has raised questions about how much we know about cloud security. Ever since Hotmail launched in 1996 many of us have been storing our messages and pictures in the remote data centres we now call the cloud. Is the problem badly chosen passwords? Or can we not trust the security levels offered by cloud service providers?


What exactly happened?

Explicit photos of 101 Hollywood actresses and models have been posted by an unknown hacker on 4Chan, an anonymous,image-sharing website. The images appear to be shots privately taken by the actresses themselves, or their partners, leading to speculation that they have been stolen from the subjects' own Apple iCloud iPhone/iPad-linked accounts. The hacker is reportedly threatening to release many more.


Who has been hit?

The victims listed include American Hustle and Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, singers Rihanna and Ariana Grande, model Kate Upton and actress Mary Winstead. The list of names the hacker claims to have images from stretches to 101 names .


Why is Apple's iCloud service in the frame?

The hacker posting the images claims to have taken them from iCloud. While that could be disinformation, the claim seems to be backed up by the fact that Jennifer Lawrence has previously mentioned using the service. An Apple spokesman declined to comment on the matter but the company is thought to be actively investigating any potential breach of its systems.


What exactly is iCloud?

It is Apple's data-centre-hosted storage and syncing system. It lets data stored on one Apple device, like an iPhone, be synced to others – like iPads – that are owned by the same Apple account holder. As such, iCloud also acts as back up for music, apps, iBooks, audiobooks, photos, device settings and app data set-ups. It is protected only by the user's login and password, however.


Has iCloud been hacked before?

Yes. A connection to iCloud can be used to find a missing iDevice when it is lost or stolen. This allows the device to be "bricked" remotely – rendering it unusable. However, in May hackers in Australia worked out how to game the system, bricking people's devices and demanding a A$100 ransom for the machine to be unbricked . Poor iCloud password security and/or password reuse was thought to be the way it had been perpetrated.


How did the hackers get in to the celebrity accounts?

It's too early to say, but poor password security seems likely. "I doubt a direct breach of iCloud has happened. It's likely the hacker breached either the direct accounts or devices of the targets. Or the devices of those close to them – or those involved in their career somehow," says Jay Abbott, managing director of Advanced Security Consulting in Peterborough, UK. "A direct breach of the iCloud system would have produced a significantly greater level of data and with it kudos for the hacker."


At Symantec's lab in Ireland, security researcher Orla Cox concurs: "It's definitely more feasible that passwords were brute forced or phished – so a client-side hack. This could have been happening over a series of months with the hacker stockpiling the photos before releasing them yesterday."


What can people do to boost cloud security?

The key thing is not to let computers boss you around – be aware of what you are dealing with. "Check that you're not automatically syncing to a cloud service. Many of them are opt-out rather than opt-in. It's better to sync manually rather than auto-sync so as this gives you better control over what you're uploading," says Cox. In addition, using a strong, long and frequently changed password that is not reused across other accounts is vital. "And be wary of emails, instant messages, or SMS messages requesting log-in details," she says.


Arming yourself with the power of two-factor authentication – in which you are sent a random code via SMS to enter in addition to a password – is a must, says Abbott. "Using multi-factor authentication is the best any user of such a service can do to protect themselves."


Should we be rethinking what personal or intimate data we place in the cloud?

Yes, says Stefano Ortolani, security researcher at Kaspersky Lab in London. "It's important to consider that as soon as you hand over any data, including photos, to a third-party service, you need to be aware that you automatically lose some control of it. To make your private data more secure, you should cherry-pick the data you store in the cloud and know, and control, when the data is set to automatically leave your device. iCloud's My Photo Stream feature uploads new photos to the cloud as soon as the device is connected to Wi-Fi. Disabling this option might be a good starting point."

Nature and conservation from a perfect point of view

An idyllic farmhouse, challenging thoughts on conservation, an author who sounds like a great guy. What's not to hate in A Buzz in the Meadow?


I HATED Dave Goulson as soon as I read the opening words of his latest book, A Buzz in the Meadow: "In 2003 I bought a derelict farm deep in the heart of rural France, together with thirteen hectares of surrounding meadow."


Things went downhill from there, as I read through chapters of beautifully written descriptions of some of my favourite arthropods, heart-wrenching stories of Goulson's encounters with various amphibians, and some snort-out-loud anecdotes about field research.


With each amusing and insightful chapter, my fury grew, as Goulson focused on particular examples of the wildlife around his horrible Charentais haven, and then broadened out to look at both the scientific and conservation aspects of the beast in question. When I thought he had missed out some research on the animal he was talking about, I turned the page, and there it was. In two cases, it turned out he had actually done the studies I was thinking about.


Although the book is not about how to rebuild a farmhouse, there is some annoyingly useful advice here. Do not use a dry hollow as a dump for gravel, as you may have inadvertently filled in a home for newts and will be obliged to spend the next few years battling moles to create a new pond. And if you have deathwatch beetle in the rafters, leave them be and enjoy the sound of their tap-tap-tap: it will take a long time for them to munch their way through the house.


The final sections sound the alarm about the damage we are wreaking on the planet, and the way that complex ecological cascades mean that apparently small changes can produce dramatic effects that will alter our lives, and not for the better. Goulson's exhortation that we should get down on our hands and knees and look is one that should be repeated at every level of education.


To cap it all, Goulson comes over as a really nice bloke. Scattered through the book – part memoir, part natural history, part popular science – are accounts of his own academic career, described in a charming, self-effacing manner.


He includes his bad times being unemployed as well as some really interesting research that casts doubt on work by the influential ecological geneticist E. B. Ford. Ford spent years trying to work out the genetics behind spots on butterfly wings; Goulson's PhD suggested that the spots were primarily induced by temperature, not genes.


Like I said, I hated Dave Goulson. But I ended up loving him. You will too. Buy this book, give it as a present. It is required reading for being a human in the 21st century.

Otter snacking on a puffin wins photography prize

A disappointing day turned into an award-winner for photographer Richard Shucksmith when he captured this image of an otter's bizarre puffin snack in the Shetland Islands in Scotland.


After hours of uneventful otter-watching, Shucksmith and his companions were heading home when they noticed a puffin diving close to where one of the furry creatures had jumped in the water. "That would be interesting, if the otter caught the puffin, never seen that before," Shucksmith recalls thinking. Sadly for the puffin, the photographer got his wish, and the otter soon surfaced with this colourful-billed bird grasped in its mouth.


The photo won in the animal behaviour category of this year's British Wildlife Photography Awards. An exhibition of the winning and commended entries will open on 2 September at the Mall Galleries in London before touring the UK.

Iron Age CSI finds gold thieves died in the act


IN 1958, archaeologist Robert Dyson was excavating the long-buried citadel of Hasanlu in Iran when he came across this beautiful gold bowl (pictured, right). But after a moment in the international headlines, the bowl and citadel were largely forgotten.


And so the unique circumstances under which the precious vessel fell to the bottom of a refuse shaft 2800 years ago are only now coming to light, as Dyson's former student Michael Danti of Boston University revisits the excavation notes.


Today, Hasanlu looks like a large dirt mound that rises 25 metres out of the Solduz valley in north-west Iran, but beneath the earth are the remains of a settlement that was occupied nearly continuously for millennia, from 6000 BC.


Sack and ruin


By the first millennium BC it would have been an impressive and prosperous citadel, surrounded by fortified walls. Then, in 800 BC, the citadel was invaded and destroyed by an organised army. The invaders swept through the city, killing everyone and setting the wooden houses alight. The buildings collapsed and entombed many who were still inside. How their skeletal remains lie offers a chilling depiction of how they died, with similarities to the sudden destruction of Pompeii in Italy.


Dyson found the bowl in the burned remains of one building. "I think it was an elite residence," says Danti. Next to the bowl were three skeletons. The helmets and maces found near the skeletons show they were not people from Hasanlu trying to flee, as first suggested by the excavators in the 1950s, but invaders.


"The soldiers are robbing the treasury and they're trying to get out in a fire, so head for the stairs – but the building collapses around them. This sends them hurtling down into a waste-disposal site," says Danti.


The fires the army started, combined with the soldiers' greed, led to their demise, it seems.

My 'verbal autopsies' reveal what really killed people


Relatives of the recently deceased are helping to pin down the causes of deaths in India, and boost public health, says epidemiologist Prabhat Jha


You are conducting a million "verbal autopsies" in India. What are they?

The idea is to ask people in a simple way what happened to their family member who died, and they describe patterns that doctors can use to infer the cause of death. This approach has been used on a small scale to categorise children's deaths in India and Bangladesh since the 1970s. For this study we extended it to include adult deaths at a national scale.


What inspired you to investigate adult deaths?

The vast majority of the 10 million deaths in India each year occur outside the formal healthcare system. They aren't medically certified – and we are left with very little information on how people died.
