From a charred elephant carcass to proteins expressed by prostate cancer cells, the top entries in this year's New Scientist Eureka Prize for Science Photography competition encompass the very big and the very small. Michael Slezak takes us through the three finalist images that will be awarded cash prizes, and other highly commended entries.
